Let me start by saying that I've read ALL the Fatal series books (most several times) and I love the characters. I liked this book a lot, but there were some flaws in the plot (in my opinion) and some very annoying stylistic crutches that the author uses far too often.First the plot points that bothered me. Why is former Deputy Chief Conklin in custody after more than a week? Surely he would have been granted bail. He's not being charged with murder, which is the only crime I know of where bail might be withheld. Furthermore, they keep emphasizing that he failed to disclose information he knew about Skip's shooting when the really serious crime he committed was telling Gallagher about Skip reopening his partner's cold case, thus leading to the shooting in the first place.Another plot point that was bothersome was the concern about Gonzo possibly be charged with a crime for scoring drugs on the street to feed his addiction. I'b be shocked if such a charge could be brought, much less prosecuted for a crime that was committed but which was not dealt with at the time. In other words, if he wasn't arrested while the transaction was taking place, it's unlikely anyone would be charged with a drug deal after the fact.Last plot point that irritated me: the uncertainly about Stahl being convicted? Seriously??? He murdered Marissa Springer by shooting her in the stomach, much less what he did to Sam. How on earth would there be any doubt about this? Trying to inflict suspense about the outcome was unrealistic.Okay, here are my stylistic gripes about the book. First, some of the things that are said in this book are said in the 15+ previous books, so they're already a little tired and worn out. But by raising them here, I'm saying that these crutches were absolutely abused in this book. Here goes:Rusty steak knife? Used NINE times in this book"Really is" (or really did) is used so often. Question is posed and Sam or someone answers, "It really is" way too often."Fresh hell" is used five times in this book. It's just redundant."Right?" When someone makes a statement that Sam agrees with, she very often (too, too often) answers "Right?" I get that we all have phrases/words we use a lot, but it just feels like the author has gotten lazy with using the same things over and over. Nick is the "scent of home". Yeah, we know.At location 4318 on my kindle, after Sam gets angry with a reporter for asking if she plans to have "real" children, Sam and Nick are talking about it and TWICE on the same page Sam says, "..but I wouldn't trade them for anything, even 'one of our own.'" and later on the page, "I wouldn't trade our kids for anything, even 'one of our own.'" She's talking to Nick and says virtually the same thing. Feels like sloppy editing to me.Small point: twice when driving to Herndon, the author says Route 66. It's I-66.Sorry if it sounds like I'm picking a bunch of nits, but I read a lot of Marie Force's books and appreciate her efforts. It just feels like she's being a little sloppy and/or lazy with her language. Great story, though.
